Barnaby started surfing when he was 7 and instantly fell in love with everything about it. In the holidays his parents would drop him off at a beach called Crackington in the morning and pick him up at dusk every day. Barnaby and his friends would go fishing or rock jumping if the waves were flat or surf if there were any waves; whatever they did, it was always in the water. In the school days he would get off the bus at the beach and surf until dark.
At the age of 12 in 2013 he started competing in the surfing GB and UKPSA contests with a few friends and also started training with Joel Gray from Surf Solutions and a year later he was offered sponsorship by Typhoon Wetsuits.
At first he found competing hard. He had a lot of first round losses and a very steep learning curve but by 2015 he was ready for anything the contest scene could throw at him and began to make finals. In 2015, age 14, he came 2nd in the English Nationals, 4th in the British Nationals, 4th in the Ripcurl Gromsearch at Fistral, 3rd in the Ripcurl Gromsearch at Croyde, 1st in a local Waveriders contest, 1st in the British Schools and the highlight of his competitive year was a breakthrough event winning both the U14s and U16s at the Jesus Surf Classic. In November 2015 he also became UK pro surf tour under 14’s champion.
2016 was Barnaby's first year in the U16s and he took this as an opportunity to beat the guys who are older and bigger than him. In 2016 he came 4th in the U16 English nationals, 3rd in the Ripcurl Gromsearch Newquay, 2nd in the U16 Nightsurf and got to the semis in the under 18’s. He came 2nd in the British Schools, 1st in the Cornish schools, and on the 9th of October 2016 won his first British Title age 15, becoming U16 British Champion.
In 2018 he is stepping up to the WSL pro junior level and competing at events around Europe in the under 18s. His goal for these is to get consecutive quarter final finishes or better (top 8 in Europe). He will also be home for the British nationals and UK pro surf tour events and his goal is to consistently win all of these events.
